Prayer-and-smriti-satsang-for-mom
At the 12th day (barwa) ceremony, official end of the grieving period, intention of the prayer was set by saying the name of the soul (mom) and name of person who is praying( Arnav- who performed the rites under the priest's guidance). Since the journey to moksha needs the soul to be resolute, the near ones offer to give up something in order to strengthen the soul’s resolve. I gave up eggplant and my sister Karishma( Barkha) gave up tea.
Both of us also resolved to fast on the 24 “EkaDashi” days in the coming year. Ekadashi is the 11th day of each moon phase. On Ekadashi days, both of us will observe a grain-free fast and only consume fruit/juices/milk(vegan).
So began our journey into understanding the Ekadashi fast. So thank you mom for this last gift, we are learning so much and are ever so grateful.
Fasting is known to give much needed rest to our gastro-intestinal system and improve the vital functions of digestion, respiration, and circulation as well detoxify the body by improving the functioning of the kidneys and the liver.
Our bodies are influenced by the moon and its magnetic pull so fasting twice a month on Ekadashi- 11th day of the moon cycle has immense benefits. You can choose to do a complete fast, water only fast, fruit fast or choose to start with a grain free fast if new to fasting like we are undertaking.
